The Jubilee Orpington Chicken was introduced by William Cook’s family in 1897. It was created to commemorate the Diamond Jubilee of Queen Victoria. It was believed that they were a cross between a Spangled Old English Game, Dorkings, and Buff Orpingtons, though some believe that the Speckled Sussex could have had a strong influence on it. Their feather color pattern is very complex and can take up to 18 months to finish. They have a mahogany ground color with black spangles with white tips at the end. Their beak, legs, and feet are white. Earlobes, face, comb, and wattles are red and their eyes also. These chickens are great for their size and temperament. They are a decent brown egg layer and cold hearty.
Like all Orpington Chickens, the Jubilees make great pets due to their calm and friendly disposition. They are also great layers of cream-brown colored eggs, laying approximately 3-5 each week. They are round and fluffy in appearance, are clean-legged, and have a single comb.
The Jubilee Orpington has a ‘royal’ history and is one of the rarest and most exquisite chicken varieties in the United States. This is because these Orpingtons have only been imported into the U.S. and Canada within the last 10 years, despite being found in England for over a hundred years.
The feather pattern which makes the Jubilee is a very complex color, and maturing birds can take up to 18-20 months to be ‘finished’. Not a bird to keep if you’re impatient!
The hens lay a beautiful light brown medium-sized egg and average 150 to 180 eggs a year. Known to be broody. best laying is generally between 8-18 months of age. They will still lay easily into their 4th year, just don't expect an egg every day!
